Discover Felix: The Character of the Terra Bianca Vineyard

Discover Felix: The Character of the Terra Bianca Vineyard

Tenuta Montiani has been in the Matteini family for four generations. It all began in the 1930s with Angelo, continued with Francesco, and then with Felicita — from whom the name Felix was born.

Today, after the family’s return in the early 2000s, the estate has come back to life as a full-fledged farm. It hosts farmyard animals, a small group of donkeys, and three vineyards: Terra Bianca (1973), planted with Sangiovese and Canaiolo; Merendero (2003), on terraced land; and a small Merlot plot used for juices, jams, and saba (grape must reduction).

A special chapter in our recent story is the collaboration with FirstGlass, an innovative wine store in the heart of Florence.
The Montiani wines were among the first in the world to be featured in their pioneering “FG” format, becoming ambassadors of a philosophy that blends tradition and modern vision.
Through this collaboration, the authentic spirit of Tenuta Montiani now reaches a broader and more international audience — sharing, sip after sip, the passion and dedication that have guided our family for nearly a century.

Every step here tells the story of tradition, nature, and passion — the values that continue to guide the family, generation after generation.

We’re proud to introduce Felix by Tenuta Montiani — a wine not just to drink, but to experience.

FELIX | IGT ROSSO TOSCANA

Felix is an ICEA-certified organic wine, bottled with low sulfite levels (35–60 mg/l), clarified with egg whites from the estate’s own hens, and produced without any added yeasts or concentrated musts.
In the vineyard, treatments are limited to copper and sulfur, always with full respect for nature.

It is not produced every year — only when the harvest yields grapes of outstanding quality. Felix is a faithful expression of the terroir of Greve in Chianti and its deep winemaking tradition.

With Felix, every sip tells the story of the care, patience, and passion that make Tenuta Montiani unique — turning the vineyard into an experience to be lived, rather than just a wine to be tasted.

From Vineyard to Glass

Felix is born from the historic Terra Bianca vineyard, planted in the 1970s on galestro soils facing southeast, surrounded by the scents of the Mediterranean scrub.
This 1.4-hectare plot, at 300 meters above sea level, preserves the deep roots of Sangiovese and Canaiolo, trained using traditional systems such as cordone speronato, cornetto, and chiantigiana.

Harvesting is done by hand, with bunch-by-bunch selection. The grapes reach the vat by gravity after gentle destemming, avoiding the use of augers or pumps and thus preserving the integrity of the berries.
Fermentation occurs spontaneously, without added yeasts, and lasts about 20–25 days. During this time, the must is carefully tended through manual pump-overs, punch-downs, and délestage, each calibrated to the character of the individual lot.

After racking, the free-run wine is separated from the press wine and rests on fine lees for one or two months — a slow, natural process that enhances its complexity and balance.
It then completes malolactic fermentation and ages in wood for 8–12 months, followed by at least six months of refinement in the bottle.

Felix has found a truly special home — a place where wine is not only tasted, but told, experienced, and shared.
Each glass poured in the store is an invitation to step into the story of Tenuta Montiani, and to discover, sip after sip, the passion that binds the land to the glass.

Cheers!
